You may be wondering why someone who isn't a seamstress or dress designer has strong opinions on bustles - I will tell you. Having photographed weddings for over a decade, there is one thing that I always keep in my camera bag or pocket - safety pins. The main reason I need these? Because the bride's bustle has broken.
Heavy lace or beading that is relying on one or two hooks or buttons to hold it up is going to break on the dance floor (or before) every single time. Unless your dress is 1-2 lightweight layers (like satin), I advise brides to ask for what is called an under bustle- the most popular type being a French Bustle. French Bustles use ribbons underneath the dress to lift and secure the fabric and I've never had one break. Other types of under bustles are the ballroom bustle or royal bustle.
Make sure to discuss with your seamstress or alterations person what type of bustle they plan to use for your dress, so you know what to expect and can make sure you can party on the dance floor all night without worrying about your dress breaking.
